KELLY MINE

Visiting Kelly Mine
The mine site is close to the A382 road, about two and a half miles north of the main Bovey Tracey (fire station) roundabout. From the Bovey Tracey direction it is on the right, a bit less than half a mile down the hill from the Slade Cross junction. Coming from the Moretonhampstead direction the mine is on the left about 1/4 mile past Kelly Cross, and about 100 yards past the narrow single track road section.
The mine is usually open on Wednesdays and Sundays, indicated by a traffic cone outside the small entry gate. There is limited parking on the grass verge beyond the gate (coming from Bovey Tracey).
If you drop in a KMPS member will normally be available to show you round, and a self guided tour sheet is also available.
Group visits can be arranged, and in this case plant, such as the stamps, can be run. U3A members, local history groups, walking groups, and others are very welcome. A complete tour of the site takes about two hours, or an hour more if plant is being run and everything is looked at in detail.
The site is uneven and has trip hazards, so suitable footwear is needed. Kelly mine is very much as it was in the 1920s; this means that disabled access can be difficult and the site does not have the facilities that are found in, for example, a National Trust property.

Open Day
Where possible an open day is held every two years, usually on the Sunday after the late (August) public holiday. The available plant is run, with demonstrations and KMPS members on hand to talk about the mine and how everything worked.
Free parking is on the Lustleigh Show ground, with a short walk across the field to the mine. Visitors with limited mobility can be dropped off at the mine site entrance, where there is very limited disabled only parking.
- Look out for local information and social media posts.
Coming from the Bovey Tracey direction. The parking on the grass verge is limited, so group visitors may want to share transport.
