KELLY MINE

The mine site is today very much as it was in the 1920s to 1940s (click/tap to enlarge)

The ore chute from middle adit, with the tramway towards the mill. Careful excavation on the tip outside middle adit showed the path of the rails leading to the waste tip and to the head of the ore chute, followed by reconstruction of an ore chute in the original position. Ore can be trammed from the adit entrance and tipped down the chute, loaded into a truck, and pushed along to the washing strips and the mill.

Mining was carried on from this shaft in the 19th and early 20th century. The headframe is a working reconstruction

Looking down the shaft. It is about 80 ft deep, although there is several feet of debris and rubbish at the bottom, needing a long term effort if it is to be cleared. The shaft top became unstable and collapsed after shaft working was abandoned in about 1915, and a major programme of work was needed to stabilise it before the new headframe could be constructed. The shaft has been fitted with platforms and ladders, and with winch haulage to allow future work.
